Review of Week One

Assignment One: Character Design

Objective:
To allow students to explore more into using simple shapes as a starting point in character design. They are encouraged to return to the foundations of drawing and not getting too involved with the advanced techniques of designing a character. This is important as most students within such a class are not accustomed to drawing and by allowing them to do simple shape drawing, they could loosen up to do more gestural sketches. In addition the exercise allows them to see the shapes in 3D. Drawing contours around the shapes they drew would help them visualize how the shape would turn around.

Mickey Mouse Head
Professor Troy has given the first exercise to draw Mickey Mouse in 5 simple steps. Drawing Mickey Mouse's head in a 3/4 view gives the students a head start in seeing how a character is drawn using simple shapes, as well as the use of contour lines for placing details of the face, eg. eyes in perspectives, the nose and the mouth. The exercise is particular useful to see and assess how the students are performing in terms of their drawing skills.

Foundations & Production Setting
Students are told to revisit the foundations constantly so they wouldn't be distracted by too many things. He has also put the students in a sort of strict regimental environment in order that they could more or less understand how a production setting works. Directions have to come from the director directly, and instructions have to be followed closely. Artists are given some creativity on what they are working, but they would still follow closely what are given in the directives. In addition, strict compliance has to be followed in terms of meeting the deadline and production schedule. These will be followed up closely even in the classroom setting.
